In my work, I am interested in exploring social, political, and philosophical issues in the context of a living
theater: aesthetics, identity, class, freedom, and the dichotomy of chaos and order. I use a variety of organic and found materials often combined with video, sound, text, and acrylic paint. Sometimes I utilize myself in the work as a medium or a signifier to express and/or evoke various thoughts and reactions. Often times interacting with people in public and private places.
The context and idea are integral elements in my work. I am also concerned with process and the subconscious in the act of making art. The New York School Abstract Expressionists, Fluxus, and the Surrealists use of automatism have profoundly influenced my work. This process relies on spontaneity and untamed expression, as well as an intimate relationship with the materials I am using; A kind of interchange of preconception and chance working together towards a common end. This approach to making art has allowed me to express myself with more freedom and integrity.
My perception of a living theatre refers to the idea that we are all actors and life is our stage. I am drawn to real life stories, heartfelt drama, comedy, adventure, horror, and the seemingly mundane rituals that help shape our identities. I am also fascinated with the process of socialization and its affects on human conduct, order, and perception of meaning or value.
This notion of a living theatre investigates systems and the nature of a socially constructed landscape. In my work I intend to not only document and reveal this life stage through action, image, and/or idea, but to create a new and more engaging sense of reality. Briefly, tapping into those fleeting moments of freedom, experienced somewhere amidst conception and process.
